Oh my Jeff Goldblum
People aren’t really spending this kind of money, are they?
There is always one of those out there. Many are panicking that Costa Farms is truly going to enter the market with all the Thai Constellations and Albos so people are trying to sell super high at the moment to make a profit, though this is well above the high level and probably an error. It could easily sell for $400 without second thought in the market.
Again, I have to wonder if someone that can afford this plant would be shopping for it on Etsy anyway.
$400 seems way closer to reasonable.
I definitely see plants sell for $5-15k on Facebook which is still boggling
I didn’t know that houseplant culture would fascinate me, but I’m fascinated by the economics of this.
@Afishwish I recommend just watching a fb group purge. It’s crazy to see people on the threads begging for $300+ plants or doing auctions into the thousands. I’ve bought from a few but mainly to grow and split with others. Some though in the groups have dedicated their lives to selling plants out of their apartments. It’s crazy to see weekly purges of hundreds of plants from the same people.
Squee!! My albo syn began to unfurl a 3rd leaf overnight! (ETA: the string thing on the side is from a small passion vine.)
Oooo what kind of passion vine? I’m a sucker for those. I love their crazy flowers and they’re food plants for these butterflies
@Afishwish it's a P. trifasciata. The top leaves are a little light stressed and turned purple! Was not expecting that at all. I also have a P. sexocellata. I got them both as leafless sticks around 3 months ago, and now they're little babies wreaking havoc with their vine shooters!
Oooohhh I just learned about my newest wishlist plant - Philo Red Anderson. Apparently it's a hybrid of Pink Princess and White Knight. I'm in love.
Mmkay so this chick who always posts way overpriced plants on nextdoor claims to be moving and selling off. $180 and $200 for rooted cuttings of what she says is a “dark princess.”
I’ve never understood the dark princess name. It’s not actually a name or a reference to a hybrid plus it loses all of the burgundy if grow correctly to get more variation
It’s kind of crazy it unfurls like that. Looks like it would snap off.
This tree. Admittedly I neglected it over the winter, as it wasn’t growing much (since; winter). But it appears I missed a pretty massive spider mite invasion. Finally got some insecticide and have doused it, need to do it again today. I will also trim off all the badly damaged parts which is a lot of it. All the lemons that were growing went to shit.
I also sprayed the one plant that may have been touching it at some point (a clearance rescue anthurium). If it wasn’t touching another plant do I need to spray the rest of them? Now that it’s not freezing I put it outdoors to deal with until it’s safe to return. Poor Meyer.
I always treat those directly in the area. So if they are within a 5 ft but not touching treat them and do it every 3-5 days to hit the mites life-stages. It should only take 5-7 treatments to clear them all up.
Spray everything. Those fuckers float on the breeze. I lost all but five of my pepper plants last year, and only the ones I moved to other rooms survived.
@Basil would you mind sharing your trusted sources for the rares/specials? I feel like making a big splash for my bday.
I found a marble queen pothos at the greenhouse for $6 Saturday so I’m feeling flush. @Lh718 what do you think you’ll get? I’ll be living through you. Two kids and a PT job doesn’t lend itself to plants that could pay for daycare but I still want.
@Lh718 I would try to do Plantyqueens, as they do a live each week so you can get an idea of the size for each that you are purchasing and they are easier to score a rarer plant. check out their instagram. I am currently debating buying the large philodendron choco red for my own birthday, but should probably wait as I just bought a hoya grey ghost. If you are trying etsy I would go with Wuhoo tropics, great service, responsive and have yet to see any damage to a plant from shipping. If you have a particular plant in mind let me know and I can point you to someone particular too.
@Basil thanks! @CoolWife no particular plant in mind, and my budget is probably still way below what the good stuff goes for . If I'm lucky, I might get a chonk / wet stick of something cool.
@Lh718 Donnysplantshop on etsy has really young plants at times at reasonable prices. Plantyqueens did just start listing seedlings of some if the more expensive anthuriums making it more reasonable.
So because I am addicted to the hunt, I went to my usual stores today despite being totally bursting at the seams. I found some variegated spath babies with amazing variegation. I had to take them home! Will post pics later because am lazy.
