Let's kick-start a music thread with a conversation about Pussy Riot.

And when I say conversation, I mean I'd like someone to tell me what the hell is going on.

They're a feminist punk band that's known for staging protests around Moscow. They went into a church and played a protest song that, roughly translated, was called something like "Mother Mary, Get Rid of Putin." They were arrested for hooliganism with intent to incite religious hatred, for which they were found guilty, and today they were convicted to two years in prison. It's totally trumped up and the religious hatred thing is a total smokescreen. The Russian government basically convicted them for criticizing Putin. It's bullshit.

Yeah, the vast majority of the media are crying foul over the whole thing... with good reason, even in Russia, 'hooliganism' isn't worth 2 years in prison.

Hooliganism is my new favorite word.

True, although apparently (I'm sure totally scientific and unbiased) polls are showing that the majority of Russians support the extreme sentence. Quite the opposite of our culture, where we for the most part support protestors even when we vehemently disagree with their fight.

I wasn't sure where to post this and since this was the only music thread I've found so far, I hope you don't mind if I borrow it, red.

Anyway, I recently started playing SongPop on Facebook and...I'm hooked. I know it's ridiculous, but I haven't been this devoted to a social media app since I sowed my first crop in Farmville. Not only do I get to annoy my friends by getting a higher score than them, but I also discover little music gems that I otherwise would not have known about. This is my new favorite bit of music that I found when I was playing the Animated Movies soundtrack:

Coconut Records is officially Jason Schwartzman's only creative output that I find enjoyable. This may change when he plays Richard Sherman in Saving Mr. Banks, but right now, Coconut Records is the only thing that makes me not hate the guy, and the rest of the Coppolas for causing him to exist. (Yes, I blame them all.)

I didn't realize he was behind Coconut Records. I love when they come onto my Pandora!

It's actually JUST him, kind of like Iron & Wine or NIN.

D, talking about musicians who write songs about their exes: "Rivers Cuomo is the male Taylor Swift."

I need to go on a major spring cleaning of my mp3 collection, which includes removing songs I never listen to, and re-categorizing some genres. It's something I do every few years and it's always a PITA. Do any of you know a good program for editing file information? I don't really like Windows Explorer, iTunes or Media Monkey. I want a program that lets me work without ever touching my mouse. Basically I want it to function just like a spreadsheet would. Too much to ask?

I'm making my summer holiday weekend playlist for Memorial Day, my birthday, Independence Day and Labor Day weekends. It's going to be mostly classic rock and Motown, but also a lot of songs with "sun", "summer" or "America" in the title.

Sounds festive! Also, on your previous post, I agree. I hate editing the song info on iTunes. Took me hours to do it when I first set mine up and I'm never doing it again. I don't even care that some of the info is messed up now. But I don't know of a better program really. :p

I use Rdio pretty much exclusively now. You can use it on the desktop for free and it's like $10 a month for mobile use. They have pretty much all the music I want to listen to, and I can share stuff with Russ like playlists. You can sync stuff to your phone so you can use when flying/no signal times/etc.

I'm trying to expand my musical horizons... what is everyone's favorite song right now? Can be old or new. I'd love to hear some great country songs because living in Vancouver you never hear any of it.

I can think on it a bit, BV and get you a list of some of my favorite country songs. My flavor-of-the-month song is Merry Go Round by Kacey Musgraves.

Mamas Broken Heart by Miranda Lambert! I grew up in country music, it's a staple in Alberta lol

I'm pretty into Daft Punk's new album. It's pretty different from their previous stuff, though.

Oh! I heard a band called Vampire Weekend on TV the other day and liked what I heard and have been meaning to get some stuff of theirs. You probably already know about them, though because I was watching Sunday Morning on CBS like the geriatric I am.

    OMJG, that is so cute.

Their third album just came out to rave reviews. I am still ALL ABOUT their first album. "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" makes me giddily happy.
