Unfortunately it’s not that cheap for us - we aren’t in a flood zone but being near the Gulf and in Florida it’s just more expensive in general. The only reason I feel like we should get it is that any damages from rain getting in wouldn’t be covered, so if a hurricane took our roof off or knocked windows out. I just hate the thought of paying MORE for insurance when it’s already so high because our roof is old. I know we should. I just don’t want to.

This reminds me that I need to look into renters insurance again. Back in our old place, we were too close to the water. I can't remember if we flat our didn't qualify, or if it was just something where they couldn't give us an online quote and we had to call about it.

    Ugh, that sucks.

If the wind is the ultimate cause of the water damage (e.g. your roof or window is damaged), then your windstorm policy would pay out. If the damage is caused by rising water (e.g. rain building up or storm surge), then a flood policy would cover the damage.

That being said, it gets real tricky when there is storm surge and wind damage. You can be screwed if you don't have flood and they conclude that storm surge or rising water was the ultimate cause of some or all of the damage. I have seen it happen.

Get renter’s insurance! Ours is only about $150 for the year (and honestly it might be cheaper than that. I would have to go find the policy). It’s definitely worth it and covers not just your stuff but if you can’t live in your apartment anymore because of damage, you’ll get money to stay somewhere else. I can’t imagine a company saying you don’t qualify.

@virgo I know we definitely weren't able to get an online quote last time, but maybe if I had called around. Looks like I can this time I can do it all online since we aren't in a hurricane flood zone anymore. Yay! This will be my project for tonight.

Yeah @Zombie Llama I 100% assume our insurance wouldn't cover anything to do with any water damage at all (better to assume the worst, right?) but we basically just keep our fingers crossed since the Tampa area really doesn't get hit with hurricanes. If we replace our roof next year, we'll likely add it then because it'll be much more affordable overall on our policy.

We had another big storm last night and the basement stayed dry. Seems the suspected eaves was the problem and TG replaced it in time

Talk to me about refrigerators. Do you love yours? What brand? Why do you like it (or dislike it)? What features are actually useful?

Water and ice in the door with a filter that’s easy and cheap to replace. It makes life just so much easier. Now we have a side by side and I hate it. Both sides are useless. I liked my bottom drawer freezer the best, and I would love one that has a separate drawer that can be fridge or freezer.

eta - we got our last filter from Amazon Essentials and it was like $12.

I love the bottom freezer. We have a GE but the water filters don’t last a long time and are expensive to replace.

We got our LG 4.5 months ago and really like it so far. We wanted a French door fridge with ice & water and bottom freezer. I like that the ice maker part is pretty slim.

Like CW I think having a drawer that can switch between fridge and freezer would be great.

Yeah I am leaning towards LG, with the intention of eventually replacing all our appliances with LG matching ones, definitely French door and I would like water and ice (though we will have to pay someone to run a water line for it, no big deal but an extra thing to deal with). I will say that I love my ZeroWater filter and may end up keeping that if I don’t like the taste of the water from the fridge filter. But an ice maker is a must.

@Erie We’ve got an in-fridge ice maker and we use both the ice and water. I was firmly planning to do bottled water only down here but for L’s teeth we need the city water so I caved and bought filters for the fridge. And I’m really happy with it! The filters are kind of pricey (should be $70 but there’s always a coupon code, so $50 for both air and water) but they last a long time and the water tastes great. We’ve been here 10 months and I just placed my second order. We have a Frigidaire though.

We got this one last fall and I still love it. The door-in-door is super useful for us because we go to the fridge a lot for soda or condiments, and those are kept in the smaller door. We don't use or have any smart features, but the one we got makes ice balls and we use those way more than we use the regular ice.

My only caveats are that we have a garage freezer so I never have to try and stuff everything in the lower one. Also I might get the ones with the separate drawer because I hate having to open both french doors to use the big lower drawer.

Wait this makes circular/globe ice? Like for cocktails??

Yep! We didn't realize it when we bought it and it was the most wonderful discovery. I think it's the "Craft Ice Maker" part because it does regular cubed and crushed in the door dispenser but ice balls have a spot in the freezer.

I liked the look of the Door in Door a lot, but it didn't come in the 33" we needed.

CRUSHED ICE?? Dammit I wasn't going to spend that much on a fridge, I was pointedly avoiding looking at that price range...

ETA: it's too tall for our space thank Jeff Goldblum or else I'd be ordering this one lol

What in the world would you ever need your fridge to be WiFi connected for? I honestly don't know.

I thinks ours you can set temperatures and such? I'm not sure. C set it up on his phone apparently but I don't think he ever uses the features. Personally I wouldn't get one of the ones with a tablet built in.

I hate the crushed ice. It takes forever and then dumps a ton in your cup and all over. C1 uses it and we always get surprised with all the little pieces when we want normal ice.

Hmmm good to know. I just thought it would be a nice feature for frozen drinks, easier to blend up and such!

I too hate the crushed ice, it almost always makes a mess as it comes out too. I’d be all over uniform Sonic-style ice balls though!

Our ice tastes weird. We’ve cleaned the ice tray multiple times and it still has a slightly weird taste though the water is fine.
