Pupdate: We are going to live with them as they are for now. We went and looked at them again today and realized that the existing cabinets are not nice enough to justify the cost of painting. I put together a little savings plan and have convinced M to agree to new cabinets AND counters in about a year.

@Comet That makes sense, and sounds like a good plan! Those cabinets and counters look almost identical to ours, which I think are pretty much the cheapest possible “look at this updated kitchen with granite countertops!” cabinet/countertop combo. We saw it in a lot of flipped houses when we were house hunting.

Excellent. Gives me time to get all excited to live vicariously through your reno without having to box up my own stuff.

Should I get this chair in blue or yellow? Or a different chair all together?

(Ignore the mess, but enjoy the cat).

Next to the couch, we are going to put a small desk and that's where the chair will go. Diagonal from the couch (not pictured) is a beige chair, blue side table, and blue accent pillow. Im thinking yellow, but I'm not sure if that particular yellow is the right one. I think I need a cooler toned but I haven't seen one that really works with the space.

Eta: this is the rug. It was night when I took the pic. It's a bit brighter during the day, when we get tons of sun.

Desk We haven't bought it yet, but that's the current front runner. It's hard because it has to be small.

pretty much open to any suggestions. I need wall shelves. The chair we have is just an Ikea poang with the walnut/beige combo.

This is the end table I want to get and put next to it

Beige curtains for now, but hopefully eventually get double curtain rods to add a bit more texture there.

Otherwise, we have a black TV stand that will eventually be replaced, so I'm not looking to match anything to that. And we have two black shelves as well that we hope to get rid of and replace with wall shelves.

I can try to get a better picture of the whole room later. Basically, the couch and rug and pandemic stir crazy is prompting a living room overhaul...

I was actually looking at that first one initially! But we cant secure anything to that wall. I think it wasnt built to code. There's also a window that's right in the corner so anything too tall would cut off the window and look weird. There's seriously so many toys in there right now so I probably wont be able to get a picture until tomorrow. Kids dumped out a bunch of toys

Oh, I did take a picture already!

Those two shelves are going to go (along with the toys. Still working on rearranging). The tall one will probably be replaced by a single floating shelf, or else nothing, because if we put anything against that wall, it makes the corner weird and boxed off.

Eta: the poang chair would look terrible there, right? I think it would block the window some and mess up visual lines. Because otherwise the chair could go there and leave me extra space for a slightly bigger desk. But I'm trying to make things look nice, not dorm room crowded style ha.

The tall shelf is definitely going to be gone. I think even something low would block off the area too much, especially if the desk is next to the window (where the shorter shelf is, but getting rid of that too). It will be a single floating shelf or nothing over there, I think.

Debating on adding these floating shelves, as modeled by K...thoughts? Too much?

I don’t think the floating shelves should go that close. Let it shine!

Thank you!! I appreciate that feedback so much. I know that the bright colors we painted the entire house in are not everyone’s cup of tea but it makes me very happy, so it’s always nice to hear that others like it too.

I mean, I do like cacti, but I feel like you could find a cute (but not too animated) lizard. Jackrabbit could be good too.
