New thread for general chatting.
We're actually in Hayward for a few days. Last week was day after day of a nightmare, so it's kind of nice to have a pretend vacation. I mean with the manual labor of moving P between offices and labs on campus, but still.
Honestly, even the smallest change from just being home all the time is really nice these days. I’m glad you are getting a bit of a break from everything you’ve been dealing with lately.
Yeah, I generally dread going home to see family but I’m actually looking forward to it because it’s not my apartment! Ask me in a week if this is still true once I get there though!
Yeah, I was excited to go see my in laws a few weeks ago.
LH, glad you are getting a bit of a "break".
I was on the phone with my mom and told her at 10:15 that I had a bit of time before my meeting at 11. She got really confused because it was 11:15 for her. Apparently, she hasn't realized in the 2 years that we've lived here that there is an hour time difference.
Sorry but this is definitely a sign of the times.
I know, right? They were thinking about taking a distanced vacation with us and I encouraged it -- they decided to do something else instead. 2020 is weird.
The Sprint-Tmobile merger took our crappy data connectivity into nonexistent territory. P is on the phone switching us to Verizon. Wish us luck.
I hope Verizon is better down there than it was for me up here!
So far so good! We're getting a connection at all, which is an improvement.
P and I are cleaning out his old office mate's half of the office. This just happened.
P: Look at this stuff!!
Me: isn't it neat? Wouldn't you think my collection's complete?
P: what? What collection? This isn't your stu--
Me: wouldn't you think I'm the girl - the girl who has, everything?
P: another movie I have to watch I bet.
Wtf how does he not even get the reference?! No P, no.
Remedying the problem tonight @megatron ! Incidentally, I'm feeling a lot watching this. It was our first VHS tape. We had Betamax in the Philiplines.
What are heaven and hell to all of you? I don't mean as a metaphor (unless you see them as fundamentally metaphorical ideas). Do you buy into the perfect home in the sky vs a pit of fire? Nothing at all?
I have a hard time with the concept of afterlife. Maybe reincarnation?
I was raised religious and there are some things you can't unlearn, no matter how far you try to stray.
I like to think I’ll see my relatives and friends again one day, but I don’t think it’s contingent on being religious or not. I do think reincarnation is interesting though and that deja vu is a thing. Tricky question lol.
The day before my mom died, my sister said, “Maybe you’ll come back as, like, a geode. You’ll get to live for thousands of years and just chill and look cool.” It doesn’t sound as poignant as it felt at the time.
I do think that, if souls are a thing, we draw them in with our first breath of life and exhale them with our last. What happens after that? Maybe it’s different for everybody. Maybe some find a new being to draw them in, others continue to roam untethered, or dissipate into the ether, or move on to somewhere else. Maybe we’re all right.
Oooh deep thoughts @Honey. I like it.
I like how your sister thinks. I've always thought, if I had a choice, it would be great to come back as grass on the green in a fancy golf course or a rich person's lawn. Talk about an easy life.
Just because the most evidence points to your brain being who you are, I think your soul is basically your brain, and when your brain stops working that’s it. When loved ones have passed though, I’ve appreciated people sharing their positive wishes about afterlife, soul, etc. (they’re in peace, they’re in heaven, etc.), because it’s meant in kindness and is a loving sentiment.
My version of this is a rich divorcée’s dog or cat for the same reason. Seems like a sweet life.
I'm watching The Good Place. I'm pretty sure hell would involve my BIL mansplaining corgis or make up to me.
My bff and I are comparing our pregnancy constipation situations via text. The beautiful bonds of friendship.
