    Awww!

Meanwhile, there are 0 babies in the nursery right now. Are they just too scared to come out before 11/3?

I would say I’m willing to crawl up into the nearest uterus, but tbh, inside a woman is one of the least safe places to be right now.

I’m bummed that I won’t be able to talk about the election results tomorrow with my kids. My class is spilt into 4th and 5th grade and I have separate Zooms for each. I have a 4th grader whose mom is a Trumper and he already drank the kool-aid (and they’re Mexican so I don’t even get it. How can you support someone who openly hates you?). My 5th graders seem to be safe as far as that goes but they’re really uninterested in the election.

    Two things here ...

First, why not talk about it anyway? So what your 5th graders aren’t interested? They have to talk about things they’re not interested in at school all the time. It’s, like, atoning for the first ten years of their lives when they’re constantly blathering about things adults DGAF about.

Second, there’s probably more than one kid in your class with GOP-leaning parents, but I don’t see why that should stop you either. It’s not like you’re planning to gloat, right?

When it comes to Trumpers, I don’t want to take any chances of them getting offended by any kind of acknowledgement that Biden won. The thing that’s making me hesitant is the fact that Trump refuses to concede and says the election was rigged which means his supporters aren’t accepting the results either. I don’t want an angry parent coming on to Zoom and yelling at me for “lying”. I might bring it up with the 5th graders. If we were in person, I would’ve been talking about this all school year but being on Zoom, I don’t know who’s listening and will get pissed off. Neither I nor my principal want to deal with irate Trumpers who take offense at stupid shit. Most likely, there aren’t other parents who are GOP. The school is almost 100% minority ethnicities and I’ve only had a couple students over the years who had family that were Trumpers. I was pretty shocked when I found out the 4th grader and his family are Trumpers. One of my 5th graders said he thinks his dad is but wasn’t sure.

You could always discuss about the process and why this year was so different with mail in voting etc. You could also spin it into how results are certified and the electoral college. Maybe not necessarily acknowledge the projected winner, but acknowledge WHY its a projection and the rest of the process.

How democracy works is an important part of any education, No matter who wins and loses kids need to know they’ll have a voice. At the end of it the people picked Biden, that’s all you have to say.

So I didn’t talk to my 4th graders about it but I did with my 5th graders. I had a few who were glad that Biden won and the rest really didn’t care one way or the other which was sad. I told them how monumental this moment is and reminded them that Kamala Harris is from Oakland (15 minutes from where they live). We discussed the 3 branches of government which is a 5th grade standard anyways. I had one kid ask “isn’t Biden a communist and he wants to get rid of the US?” I asked where he heard that and he said the news. Has Fox been saying that or is his family watching one of those super right wing channels? Holy shit. I told him no and that Biden is a Democrat. I spent about 15-20 minutes talking/trying to start a discussion about the election and the making of history. Overall, they just weren’t into it and it makes me sad. I really miss 6th grade because those kids have opinions and want to have discussions.
I did also explain the mail-in ballots and also how the media calls states and the election.

I totally hear what you guys are saying. It’s just that I’ve had a very unsettled teaching career so far and I don’t want to rock the boat with anything right now. Trumpers are insane and even saying something like the people picked Biden I think would piss them off given they don’t think that’s true. There just wasn’t a way to talk to the 4th graders about it on Zoom. With 5th grade, US govt is a standard so if a parent gets pissed, I can fall back on that. It’s not part of 4th grade at all though so I could potentially get in trouble if a parent gets pissed off (which is stupid but could happen).

Is CA history still a big focus in 4th grade curriculum? Because what I think will be interesting for them is seeing what happens within our own state. Now that Kamala is our VP elect, they get to see Newsom appoint a new state senator, which is noteworthy in its own right.

I shouldn't be surprised, but OMJG. Not sure Fox is saying that specifically, but I've seen similar things on facebook posts and I've seen a lot of Trumpers are going to Newsmax or OANN for news now which are even more crazy right wing. They or Brietbart are probably saying it.

@virgo this is just a cute aside: I’m currently talking to my grandma about this and she totally understands and agrees with your reticence. She also lit up about how much she loved fourth grade. “I loved my teacher and learning all about California history. My parents took me to so many goddamn missions that year. One or two would have sufficed.”

@Honey  CA history is still the focus so I can definitely discuss what will happen to Kamala Harris’ senate seat with the 4th graders. That will be a good talk!

@Imabug1002 the kid who said it also said his parents didn’t like either candidate so I was really surprised when he asked that question. I was like

We've implemented a "no meetings after noon on Friday" rule which sounds nice, but now those 5 hours of meetings are crammed into the few open times I have, lunch, before 8am or after 5pm. I'd rather just have them Friday afternoon.

D has “meet less Fridays” but it’s only his department so it just fills up with everyone else who can’t get on his calendar the rest of the week. Basically it’s a nice idea with no thought to actual consequences.

Lol @ today. One dad had me reheat SEAFOOD for their breakfast this AM. Station stinks now. Then it wasn't hot enough halfway through, so more stinky time. THEN the lady cleaning their room told me it was all thrown away anyway.

    Another room...
Patient: can you make the room any darker?
Me: I can put the shades down.
Patient: but then I can't see the outside.
    Me: ...

Too many people live this lifestyle.

Remember a couple months ago when people were trying to tell me companies aren't going to go fully remote because of the pandemic? Jokes on them, found out today we're giving up our office space and going fully remote. My first question to my boss was "does this mean J and I can move again?" and she glared at me (via video call) and said we could talk about it. We're in our lease until October next year so we got time to plan but now we get to determine where we want to adventure next.

One of my patients and I had a moment today.

Patient: I don't want to be cath(eter)ed again. I'm trying really hard to pee but nothing.

Me: If only I could pee for you. I've been holding it since we pulled out your initial catheter!

(I dont talk to all my patients like that. We just had that kind of rapport going.)

@Lh718 it’s beautiful when two souls click like that.

When I was recovering from my section and the nurse changed my very full pee bag she said “ooo, good kidneys” in a very earnest complimentary tone. To this day it amuses me. You can knock me down world, but at least I know I have good kidneys.

    Lolol another one today.

Me, in a very happy tone: aww see? You're NOT a little bitch!

Patient had to remove her csection dressing today and was, understandably, scared and squeamish. She took it off hella slowly and with an O SHIT look the whole time. She apologized for being a little bitch halfway through. I just kept cheering her on and exclaimed (quote) when she finished.
