Three legs instead of two? Yeah I would not accept that in the least.
@deet Do not accept it until you research and find something you want. You should be able to change relatively easily or cancel if the change was "significant" which this sounds like it was. Who are you flying with? I love the points guy for weird airline information those these links might provide a bit of background before calling. Also, if you don't get the response you want, it's ok to decline, hang up and call back to try to get someone different.
American. I think we have limited options, it looks like (from a cursory search) they're the only ones going out there from the US. We always had 3 flights on the way back.
Edit: I can call & change to a 2 flight on the way there, I did find one. I think they'll accommodate me.
My mom is currently on a cruise and they were affected by the earthquake in the caribbean They were supposed to dock in Jamaica tomorrow but now she's not sure what's going to happen. I can't imagine what it feels like to feel an earthquake and aftershocks from a ship!
Oh my goodness. That’s so scary! I’m sorry canal. I’m glad she’s safe and was able to contact you.
Thats so scary! I’m glad she made contact!
Your poor mom. I hope it’s (literally) smooth sailing from here on out.
That's so scary, Canal, I'm glad she's ok.
That’s wild - glad she’s ok and somewhere safe for now.
It’s so crazy! Of all the hazards I would expect to encounter on a cruise, an earthquake isn’t one of them.
Glad she's ok!
It’s good that this happened to my mother and not my MIL My mom isn’t phased by much. When I was a kid we were in Caracas going to the beach and I was like “mom why are all these guys lining up with machine guns?” And she was like “they’re not here for you, ignore it!”
@Canaligator did she feel it? I could have sworn I read you don't feel them at sea.
Omg your mom is hilarious @Canaligator . Glad she’s okay and I hope they figure everything out. And if it happened to your MIL she would be demanding Her Sons fucking swim to her.
I think she did based on her text! I will get more details tomorrow - I had a lot of follow up questions.
Well we're going to add that to the list of "reasons Tumnus doesn't want to go on a cruise."
Haha so it turns out she "didn't really feel it" but her friend that she's traveling with says she knew it was coming because she got a headache And they are docking in Jamaica after all, so apparently this didn't have as big of an effect on my mom and her trip as her initial texts led me to believe. Still crazy though!
Flying to Europe - best to go directly to airline for tickets or some cheap flights provider like expedia or whoever? Prices on KLM website look not bad, just don't know if I could do better or if it's not safe to bother?
Others might disagree, but I always feel better booking directly with the airline. I feel like they treat you better if there is a schedule change / etc and you also get communications directly from them if anything goes sideways.
I'm leaning that way too, mostly because it's overseas. It's one thing to have a bit of a screw-up flying a few hours to the States, but this is different. And the ticket prices aren't bad anyway. Thanks.
I usually go direct with the airline too, it’s usually even the best price.
Directly with the airlines. If you have a delay or cancellation and book through a 3rd party, it's up to the 3rd party to rebook you and deal with issues vs. the airline (who you could deal with face to face in the airport or they can also auto-rebook you.) Plus a lot of 3rd party sites don't allow you to take advantage of airline status or credit card perks since you didn't book direct.
This is all a good reminder for me as I figure out how I am getting to DC in April - normally I book way in advance and can get a cheap shuttle flight but since I don't want to book until I'm reasonably certain I'll be able to run 10 miles, I'm finding myself facing high fares and I was considering using my Chase points to book through the portal so it's not my cash money. However, that means I would not be booking directly with the airline. Hmm. That said, I could actually get a first class fare for a reasonable number of points (like 1/3 of the points I have) and it would be fun to travel in style since I am staying at a 5 star hotel (the closest to the start/finish because Canal ain't no fool).
You can transfer chase points to an airline FF account and book directly too. You can get a better deal with the transfer on a per point basis than the standard 1.5 you get on the chase portal, it just depends on the transfer and point cost. Seriously, I use TPG for all my travel award questions: https://thepointsguy.com/guide/redeeming-chase-ultimate-rewards-maximum-value/
Yes I love TPG! I want to fly American because I get a free bag and priority boarding and of course AA is not one of the programs you can transfer points to.
