They don't allow smokers at all. They've got a lot of very stringent policies at this particular health system unfortunately

    That was more for example.

but what kind of health system recognizes the dangers of smoking so stringently, but not the benefit of breast milk for nursing infants that they’re nickel and diming a working mother for 30 minutes of their time?

    that’s downright shameful.

I got dinged for excessive overtime today, which tangentially doesn't sound right since I was called off or sent home early a handful of days. Anyway, now I have to create a formal plan with goals and objectives to help me do better at clocking out on time. Cool, whatever, I get it. That being said, I highly doubt that:

    1) Don't have lab be FIVE HOURS late on scheduled blood draws for critical workups,
    2) Tell [particular doctor] to stop being so damn slow with discharge orders and get them out before 3pm, or
    3) Make sure patients have crises earlier in shift, preferably before lunch,

will work as viable points on my plan.

That sounds like having to write a plan when I got sent to the workers comp doctor after falling down a single step at work. I wrote “walk better.” Seriously there was nothing I could have done differently.

I have to do incident forms sometimes and it's always shit like this. For customers it's usually "have more care on the stairs" but like recently one was like "the box office assistant who the ceiling fell on did nothing wrong" and another was like "I don't think my own actions led to being assaulted in broad daylight" except I didn't have the balls to be quite so sassy and toned it down.

I was chatting with one of my employees and I asked her how she was doing today. She looked me dead in eye and said “I am dirt” and wow if that isn’t relatable af.

Ugh, that's how I feel today. I feel like every little thing went wrong, like the printer would only print one page at a time so I had to send my mailing to it 45 times, one for each letter, a weekend employee quit, a coworker I'm close to had a meeting with her boss and it seems like they might be trying to manage her out...ugh.

And someone from box office just sent a work email to my personal account. It's not even urgent. Piss offfffff

I had a really great 1:1 with my manager today. I am 11 months into the role and she told me I have "assimilated very well and have one of the strongest case loads on the team" -

I really hope I get to keep her for a long time. Good managers don't last too long here because they get promoted so fast

belated but yes, this. They’re also really pushing that they want their employees to be super healthy (we have annual biometric screenings) and I feel like it isn’t emotionally healthy for me to not pump and feed my child but I don’t see what leverage I have here.

@moose that is some BS. I work for a state health department that had enormous billboards and city buses shrink-wrapped in pro-breast feeding ads (designed and paid for by said health department) while I was fighting for a scheduling platform for moms to choose their times rather than having them assigned by an administrator, and space for more than one pumping mom at a time when there were 12 pumping moms in the building.

Is your supervisor sympathetic? I started with mine, then banded together with the other moms, and we pushed on administrators, supervisors, and the facilities manager until we got accommodations for 4 moms at a time and an electronic scheduling system.

I didn't have the energy or the boldness after my first baby, but was able to lean into my maternal rage after the second one.

If they want to talk the talk, make 'em walk the walk.

Disclaimer: I'm a Cice burn it with wildfire sort, so.

My boss wants M to come work with us. Hard no. For so many reasons.

@ClamJam they were as supportive as they feel they can be, if that makes sense. I was told I can’t have anything extra because it needs to be the same as it was for other moms who pumped at this facility before.

I checked the schedule of another pumping therapist in our system (different satellite location) and she is being given 3 pump times per day without adjusting. Not sure why that center is treating it differently.

The one other coworker in my position announced she’s due this summer and I told her to take as much leave as she wanted and not worry about it. Boss was worried about her being gone a long time and said as much to both of us and I was all “no, I got this, it’ll be fine; be gone as long as you feel you need to; come back part time at first if you can get them to agree to.” They know that was the big reason I left so I appreciate Boss is trying to strike a balance between me not feeling overwhelmed but making sure coworker feels like she’s getting the leave she needs, but I have told her I have her back for whatever arrangements she wants because going back is hard.

Basically for the first time since this all happened last spring, I feel like there was a purpose to my shitty maternity leave.

@moose that's BS. Why can't they start doing things differently going forward? I agree they probably shouldn't give you special treatment but you aren't going to be the last pumping mom to come through. Have they been using the same HR policies on literally everything since they opened because otherwise they can't claim that

I just feel like I shouldn’t have to choose between feeding my baby and spending time with my baby. Sucks, but for now I’ll choose feeding because it’s the most important thing going on right now. I just wish the system as a whole, or even the state, valued women and their needs.

What is your daily schedule like? Do you drive for your commute? Could you pump in the car on the way to or from work to either not have to "pay back" the 30 minutes, or to minimize the need to add another pump because you had to stay back for those 30 minutes? Even when your employer isn't so stringent, it is really tough squeezing everything in to an 8 hour workday.

  24. moose

    moose RINGWORM GIRL :(

@ClamJam that works for M/W, but on Tues/Thurs I start work at 7:30, lunch at 12, leave at 6:30. It’s way too many hours between pumps that day and it’s uncomfortable/leaky plus shit for my supply.

I do pump during both commutes though, which has been an awkward adjustment!

  25. ClamJam

    ClamJam Chicken

Uggghhhhh why an 11 hour day???! And they want you to add 30 minutes? I am sharpening my pitchfork, putting on a diaper, and driving to FL.
