Lol I fell in love with a one year old A3 convertible. It’s basically new but 60% of the price of a new one. It might be more car than I need but fuck it, I’m worth it.

Lucy was with me at the dealership! But the Doggles just arrived last night during her remedial doggo class so I haven’t gotten to try them on her yet. Tl;dr: we are working on doggles and photos will be forthcoming!

Love the car! If I didn’t have my VW, I’d have an Audi.

W has to work today and I have to take Lucy to the vet so he took my car to work so I could have the wagon. It’s 42 degrees out but he took back roads so he could drive with the top down :)

I knew a guy a few years ago who drove literally everywhere all year with his top down. In Michigan. I bet he still does.

I feel so car stupid, but I don't know the answer to this. For Christmas this year I want to buy A a backup camera for his car. The model he wanted was hard to find and didn't come with one. I can find some after market cameras that say they work with his car, but will some random mechanic install it? Or should I look for a specific type of mechanic? I've been leasing for so long I don't have a mechanic that isn't my dealership.

Does any version of his car come with one? If so the dealership might be able to add one.
Otherwise I’d look for a car stereo place, they usually do heated seats and all kinds of electronics.

I would look for a place that installs car audio stuff since it’s more like that than the stuff mechanics do.

Will it be a surprise Christmas morning? If so you should also get one of those giant bows from the holiday car commercials to put on top of the car!

Is anyone else impatient to see the new Ford Broncos? My dad and grandpa both drove them, so nostalgic me is dying to see what the new models look like.

I saw it at the auto show this year. My ex had one that he loved more than me though, so I'm predisposed to hate it.

Please teach me about tire chains.

We’re likely spending NYE at/next to Yosemite, so we need tire chains. We’ll be taking R’s 2019 Honda HRV, which according to the manual for 215/55R17 tires, requires “Cable Type: SCC Radial Chain SC1036.”

I don’t think we need great chains since we’re not likely to use them much, but I don’t want to buy ones that immediately break either, leaving us stranded or at the mercy of whatever happens to be available.

So where do we buy them? Amazon, or? I feel like I can’t assume our local Autozone will have them in stock or that the people who work there will know anything about using chains.

You'll be fine with chains in the $40 to $50 range (Amazon, Autozone, etc.). If you want to put them on yourselves, watch some YouTube videos in advance and practice. Or take the easy way out and pay the chain monkeys to install them.

I asked S to look online for an appropriate set. Will post a link in a bit.

p.s. you can also easily buy them on your way up to Yosemite.

Got it, thanks! My concern with buying them on the way up is that they’d be overpriced.

@fantasynerd since the manual says cables, make sure to get the cables and not the chains! I’m guessing the clearance in the wheel well isn’t enough for chains and they can damage your car. A lot of people don’t realize there’s a difference between the 2 types. Also if your HRV has AWD and all season tires (rated M+S) then you won’t need to chain up. When conditions get to R3 (when everyone chains up, no exceptions), CalTrans closes the roads. AWD and all season tires are good for R1 and R2 conditions. You still have to carry chains/cables though. We carry cables in the Subaru but have never and will never use them.

We still chain up sometimes even when not required (Suburu with AWD) because Echo Pass can be pretty slick and that ledge is insane. I would probably do the same in parts of Yosemite since guardrails are few and far between.

We bought our chains on the way to Tahoe when we first moved here and they weren't overpriced. But S is looking for you.
