Can we have a name thread?

I am struggling. I shouldn't even be thinking about this yet, we never even discussed our son's name until I was something like 24 weeks.

I have an overwhelming feeling it's a girl. The only name I feel super attracted to is Ava and it is incredibly overdone, especially in Michigan. I am entertaining Nola, but I feel like it sounds weird. We had discussed it when I was pregnant the first time very briefly, because we were married in NOLA.

I also love Noelle, but I feel like that's a mouthful of a first and last name, and prefer the spelling of Noel, but that would include those dots (blanking on the name.)

There's so many of us pregnant... please commiserate on names with me. Why is this so hard?

I love Ava!! Don't love Nola. Would you pronounce it like Noh-luh? Noel/le is nice. I know a couple of cute Noel/le's.

Do you have a middle name in mind you want to use? Like a family name? That helped me narrow my choices when I was picking P's name.

Noelle is really pretty and aren't you having a Christmas baby? All the Noels I know are guys, and Noelles are girls.

Ava is nice too, never come across one so I wasn't aware it was getting popular again.

I am attracted to very short names because our last name is long and ethnic, if that helps. My son's middle name is my maiden name, so that was easy. I really have no direction on a girl's middle name. Possibles: Rose (my middle name) or Kendall (my grandmother's middle name, but the Kardashian's whyyyyy.)

ETA: @Rico Suave also, yes, Noh-luh. And the difference, as I understand between Noelle and Noel is Noelle is pronounced No-ell and Noel is Nole...so they aren't the same.

I agree with Ham about the spelling.

Kendall doesn't automatically make me think Kardashian. Kylie does, but not Kendall. I think Kendall is cute.

I like Noelle and don't think it is too much with your last name. If you're looking for something like Nola, what about Nora?

Kendall is a nice middle name, if that's what you were going for! The Kardashians probably won't be as famous by the time your kid is in school, none of those kids will remember.

ETA I love Fitz's suggestion. Nora Kendall. I don't think I know your last name though so I don't know if that goes.

I like Nola, i think it's pretty, and different without being too out there. I think Ava is pretty but I do think it's getting pretty popular. My top girl names are Liza and Lola. For boys I like Finnegan and Sebastian. N and I have very different ideas about names so that will be fun. Liza is the only name for either sex that we both love. Our only other agreement is that the first girl will get Yvonne as a middle name, for my grandmother.

I was going to suggest Nora as well. I also really like Kendall.

C and I like Luke for a boy and I get to pick the middle name. We have a few names we like for a girl, but the middle name would be Anne as my sister and MIL share that middle name.

I think Rose is nice too! I saw June on a list of southern names floating around Facebook today and thought that was pretty. My last name is one syllable, so we're planning to choose first names that have at least two.

  14. I have a Nola in my class and she's sweetheart, so I have a love for the name. Also in love with the name Liza.

I know 3 Nora's or Norah's born relatively close to each other. Ava has been in the top 10 for years, and in the top 3 for like...over 5 years in Michigan, I think. I was looking at the SSN database. I guess having a popular name is not a bad thing... I was immediately drawn to Ava Noelle. My last name is Hispanic and ends in Z. Use any one of them and you can generally get the feel!

I only know one Ava so it doesn't seem overdone to me. I also really like Noelle, but Nola isn't my favorite.

Our top girl names at the moment are Hannah, Avery, Harper, Kendall, and Meredith. Middle name will be Jane after M's grandmother. We had a boy name picked out before we even got married - Cole (my maiden name) James (M's dad). If we ever had a second boy, we like Andrew, Chase, and Bennett all with David (my Dad and M's uncle) as the middle name).

FWIW, I don't think it's too early to be thinking about names...I'm not even pregnant and we've talked about it a ton!

We're not even trying and we've talked about it a ton! Maud or Ingrid for a girl, Thomas for a boy. I like more names than A does, he's really picky.

Thanks, guys. @Comet, I love Avery. And I got the general feeling Nola wouldn't be well liked. Just doesn't roll off the tongue very easy.

I'll probably have another boy after being convinced it's a girl. Also, my husband and I haven't even discussed names. Probably won't until we know. Maybe I should scour through my Stephen King books until then.

It's never too early! We talked about names a lot leading up to my IVF transfer, then not at all while newly pregnant. Now that we are heading into our next transfer names are on my mind again. I know we are transferring 2 embryos so I'm not-so-secretly hoping for twins. I have a list of girl names a mile long (most of which N hates).

Random question: do you guys think sibling names need to match or be at all cohesive? Like if we do Liza, should all siblings sort of mesh well with that?

The Noelle reference is actually to my best friend since 5th grade, and we haven't even talked in going on 3 years (long story.) She spells is Noel with the dots and it is prevalent in her family. I mentioned it to her before and she was really touched. Even though we don't talk, I do miss her and love her and am not deterred from using it.

Talking about baby names is like the equivalent of saying what you would do if you win the lottery. Just something fun about it.

We've had our names picked out since 2010 and didn't start TTC until 2013, so....

@Kimmers I don't think they need to match or be cohesive but I'm probably going to make my kids name be that way. P's name is Greek so J and I kind of talked about giving the next one a Greek name too.
